Phil is a Senior Professor (Personal Chair) of Human Factors and Cognitive Science within the School of Psychology at Cardiff University. He directs the Human Factors Excellence (HuFEx) Research Group and is Director of Research within the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics & Human-Machine Systems (IROHMS). He directs the Airbus Centre of Excellence in Human-Centric Cyber Security (ACE-H2CS) and is Visiting Professor at Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Canberra (Australia). He is also Director of HumaniFAI Ltd.
His expertise lies in a wide range of areas including Human Factors, human-machine interface (HMI) design/human-computer interaction (HCI) and sociotechnical aspects of AI, automation, Cyberpsychology and robotics. With more than 50 funded projects (value > £40 Million), his research bridges Human Factors and Cognitive Science: addressing important practical issues within workplaces whilst drawing upon theory and using – and often developing – best practice methodological approaches, e.g., using behavioural experimental and human factors techniques.
